Naviage Naviage is a RTS game that is available online. Although Naviage is not the usual RTS game that most gamers have become accustomed to. This is mainly because of the games setting. Most RTS games are set in the Middle Ages where you have to construct cities and your army is full of swords and shields. Its refreshing to note that Naviage is set in the high seas as you battle pirates on battleships. Fans of the recent Pirates of the Caribbean movies are sure to enjoy seeing some of the action seen in Naviage. Before you start Naviage, there are the usual pre-game etiquettes of choosing your on-screen avatar. You cannot alter the actual appearance of your main character but you there are multiple choices of male and female characters for you to choose from. One of the best things about playing Naviage is the excellent background music that is used throughout the entire game. Some soothing and relaxing piano music can be heard at the very beginning of the video game when you are choosing your main character. The music then changes to some dramatic Hollywood-style orchestra when you are attacked by some pirates. Its obvious that the developer for Naviage has seen the famous Pirates of the Caribbean films as the music is similar in capturing the somber mood of pirates attacking innocent people. Naviage starts off in dramatic fashion and is one of the more exciting tutorials ever assembled from a free-to-play video game. As aforementioned, you and your fleet are attacked by pirates the moment you start playing Naviage. Although combat in this game is fully automated (as in you cannot control the ships and their cannons manually), you do have chance to witness the battleships out on the sea trying to kill each other. The animations in the game are great as you actually see the cannons firing off the ships exploding the other ships. The battles are also in full audio so you are never playing this game in utter silence like it is in some other browser-based free-to-play video games. Once you defeat the initial pirate onslaught, you are then able to customize your own fleet and explore the high seas from around the world. You initially have only one port where you can create you fleet of ships. As you progress further into the game, you are able to explore the world and able to obtain a second port for you to construct a bigger fleet for yourself. Naviage opens up once you have played the game for a few hours and have enough ships to explore the rest of the world. There are other players occupying other ports in the game you have a choice if you want to befriend or make enemies with your fellow Naviage players. Naviage is one of the more unique free-to-play video games I have played in the last couple of months. I like the way that the game is set in the 16th century and that its based on naval warfare. I feel the Middle Ages is used too many times that it gets boring. The battle sequences are great to witness and the music is even better to listen to. Definitely make sure to check out Naviage the next time you are on your computer.

RiotZone RiotZone is a MMO browser based strategy game that is highly unique unlike many other strategy based free to play video games I have played in recent months. There are many factors that make this game unique and much more fun to play than the traditional RTS games that are usually released for you to play online. Not only is the combat different in this game, but the setting and visuals are also appealing as well. RiotZone is set in a fictional land called Merania. The back story is told in impressive looking comic book style artwork which is a great introduction to the game. Normally free to play video games lack an introduction of any kind so it is nice to see one introduced here. As always, there are two factions that are at war of each other and it is your choice to choose which faction you would like to fight for. Once you have done all that, you are off to learn the basics of the game in the tutorial. One thing I really admire about RiotZone is its artwork and setting. Most free to play strategy games are based in Medieval Europe where you fight with swords or magic. RiotZone has a more contemporary setting and the main weapons you will use are modern day machine guns and the like. Not to mention the character models in this game are also pleasing to the eye. Being as this is a strategy based video game, combat in this game is not controlled by the player directly. In my opinion, this was a missed opportunity as a game like this could have benefitted greatly if you could actually control your soldiers on the battleground itself. Combat is simulated and all you have to do is witness your soldiers getting shot. This is not a bad thing if you are used to these types of games, but I had to urge to tell my soldiers to retreat sometimes as they would just stand there in one positions getting bombarded with bullets all the time! The only thing you can do during combat is aid you soldiers by giving them health pack to recover lost life or other special items such as calling for an airstrike. I guess this is better than nothing. Visually, RiotZone looks similar to Team Fortress 2 but on a much smaller scale. The 2D style visuals are great to look at and it is something you really see from free to play MMO games online. Another great feature is that the game has sound effects too. The guns add a sense of atmosphere to the game that you do not get to experience while playing other strategy based video games.Missions can be undertaken almost immediately and are fast and quick depending on how good you are. There are no tedious boring tasks of constructing buildings or walking along vast distances to get to an objective like you would in most other free to play video games. That being said, missions themselves are not explained in too much detail which can be a little frustrating. The game does not tell you how many enemies you will have to kill. Although most missions in this game involve you killing enemies anyway but it can be annoying since some enemies may come out of nowhere and kill you if you happen to be on low health. There is PvP combat in this game, but some might think this might be a little bit pointless considering battles are all simulated in this game to begin with. The way to win against real players lies within how you recruit news soldiers in your team or how you equip your weapons. There is a fair bit of customization options you can do in this game which makes it a lot of fun. Not only can you purchase new weapons and armor for you characters, but you can also hire tougher mercenaries to join your side as well. These results in larger scale battles that can be quite entertaining to watch despite the lack of control you have over your own characters. RiotZone is a really fun free to play video game that is unlike the many other RTS games I have played in recent months. It is a game that may not be for everyones taste but the excellent presentation and plethora of missions you can undertake in this game are sure to win the hearts of some gamers.

Stronghold Kingdoms Stronghold Kingdoms is a massively multi player online real time strategy game with a Medieval castle building theme. It was developed by Firefly Studios and based upon their commercially successful and popular Stronghold series of games. Firefly Studios started development of Stronghold Kingdoms in 2007 as their first entry into the mmo genre. The first Alpha test began in 2009 and was open only to 150 players. These were drawn from previous testers of Firefly Studios games, others volunteered via prominent fansites. In addition to the central theme of castle construction and design, Stronghold Kingdoms incorporates a variety of architectural, economic, military, agricultural, mercantile, industrial and political elements which challenge players ability to prioritize, direct work-flow and resources and administrate their holdings in the manner of a medieval land holder or noble. An individual player's success is not entirely predicated upon the ability to successfully defeat computer generated enemies, but also upon teamwork with fellow players. The player begins relatively alone, one village amongst others in a single parish. From this beginning, strategic decisions are made and dialogue established with fellow parish members which introduces the social aspect of Stronghold Kingdoms. All players can vie for stewardship of the parish, dependent on rank. When two or more players wish to be Steward they can negotiate to decide who will take control of the parish, or take it by force, razing out the opposing players village from that parish. If Theology is researched, then monks can be deployed to infiltrate the parish and influence the vote. This is usually referred to as a monk war in the game vernacular. When the successful candidate becomes steward they gain control of the parish army along with the ability to set taxes , and build the necessary guilds to improve life for all in the parish.
