Spiral Knights

Spiral Knights Spiral Knights is an action MMORPG developed by both Three Rings Design and Sega. As the title may suggest you play the role of a Knight whose objective is to reach the bottom of the Clockworks, which is a huge dungeon with selected levels that are randomly chosen. Every few days or so a zone is removed and replaced with a new one. It is a basic setup and it works rather well, however theres one huge problem I have with Spiral Knights, and I cant continue any further into the review until I address it. That problem is, simply put: Spiral Knights is a Pay to Play game wearing the disguise of a Free to play one. What does this mean? Allow me to explain. To do anything in Spiral knights, anything you require a substance known as Energy. Energy can be bought either with Crowns, the currency used in Spiral Knights or with real money. At this point youre probably thinking oh, well you can buy Energy with in game money, whats the problem with that? The energy is actually sold by other players who bought it with actual cash, and then auctioned off. This makes it incredibly difficult for new players to quickly get up to higher levels, unless they're willing to pay. It costs energy to go to dungeons to make money, and the best way to make money then is to sell materials you get. At this point you will be thinking well, great! I will go get some materials and sell them off and get more energy! then you realize that no one ever buys materials unless they are incredibly rare ones you can not obtain. This is the point where most people will probably stop playing, but theres more! As soon as you start you have 100 mist, mist is exactly the same as energy but stored in a different spot. Mist recharges over time (It takes about a day to get back to 100 energy after using it all) This is the part where you say well, I will just stick to mist and play sparingly then you realize that mist is capped at 100 and you need more than 100 energy to do anything. This means you will have to buy energy at one point or another. 2 star equipment takes 50 energy and 400 crowns to create, not including the money you need to buy the manual and the time it takes to buy or find the materials. 3 star equipment costs 200 energy and 1000 crowns. 5 star equipment costs 5000 crowns and 800 energy. As of this review the price to buy energy with crowns is 6,200. Lets just say you already have 100 mist on you, you still need to buy 700 energy. This means you actually need to pay about 48400 crowns for that piece of armour. Then you realize that you have to make the helmet, shield and weapon too. That brings it up to round about 160200 crowns, and thats not including buying the manuals or materials, which would boost it up much, much higher. In total this is 3200 energy for a five star set of equipment. At this point if you dont even want to play anymore I would understand, but that's not to say that Spiral Knights doesnt have good things about it. The game play is absolutely fantastic, especially if you play it with three other friends, the enemies are all very nicely varied, the game is also quite challenging even if you know what you are doing. It costs 10 energy to go down a floor in the clockworks; there are three floors between every break. When you reach a break there will be a merchant and some healing stations, this merchant is generally the only way to get rarer manuals, which are randomly selected to be in the shop. So it costs 30 energy every time you want to make a trip to the manual merchant. I am sorry that I am going on and on about the energy system, but its a huge part of the game and because of its current incredibly high price I really can not see any newbie being able to get into the game, I could barely afford to buy energy when it was 3000 crowns, never mind 6000. At the end of the day, all Spiral Knights really has going for it is the gameplay, which is only good if you dont lag in the slightest. Honestly the energy system is a good enough and big enough reason for most people to stay away from this game, and I really do not blame any of them.

Enjoying Fun Action Packed RPG with Spiral Knights

Hack and Slash action RPG kind of games never grows old for game lovers all over the world, that's probably why companies continue to produce latest outing of this genre. One of the titles that receive continuous upgrades and gradually attracting attention is Spiral Knights, crafted by Three Rings Design in collaboration with Sega as its' publisher. This Isometric style MMORPG will remind gamer with the likes of Diablo and Zelda where they are taken into a hack and slash role playing world filled with interesting puzzles to solve. Moreover, this game also put a strong emphasize on co-op adventure as players can team up with other people as they explore dungeons and battle monsters.

As starter, before officially getting themselves into the Spiral Knights realm, gamer need to download and create an account first. After completing those requirements, game lovers can star creating their preferred knights along with naming that character. There's pretty good amount of options for creating a hero, but it must be noted that the knights doesn't really have any distinguish facial features or gender. The major choices for players are merely about armors, accessories, color, height and eye shape, which is more than enough to set a specific knight based on their personal choice. Soon after finishing those early setup, gamer can finally star their adventure where at first they are taken into an area called as crash site located at a planet named Cradle.

In that beginning area, players will be receiving all of the basic information about this outing, notably regarding the gaming control that can be used. Further explaining this part, gamer can basically pick between mouse clicks or with basic WASD keys for movement. Game enthusiasts can obviously combine them, such as using keys for moving around while mouse clicks to attack opponents. Other options being provided are using game pad, for those who owns one, or setting up their own key controls which can be accessed via setting menu. This wide range of options surely bring many joy for everyone as they can just use any king of movement setup that suits them best in playing this kind of genre.

Sharing more about the basic story line of this outing, in this title, game lovers are basically part of the space traveling soldiers from Isola who unfortunately crashed down at Cradle. Knowing the existence of intriguing and reconfiguring dungeon called Clockworks, this soldiers sent on a quest in search for potential energy sources that can help them relaunching their mother ship called Skylark. That's practically the basic story guide of Spiral Knights, not anything complicated but still quite interesting for players who love to know more about the reason of their journey. That premise is also the reason why gamer starting out their adventure at crash side area as they make their way into rescue camp before eventually reaching temporary settlement called Haven.

Just as it was short described above the game play of this outing is an isometric mission based dungeon crawling where players are sent to finish up certain linear quest that keep them on progress with the game's story. Obviously, aside from completing the requested mission, gamer can also keep themselves busy by competing into PvP actions. The quest will mostly put players into dungeons, in which they're required to join into party consisting between 1-4 members. Although game lover can just decide to go solo since it will offer them the opportunity in facing lower health enemies, but with some traps and puzzle being placed it's strongly advised that they team up with others instead. Being an action RPG genre, as many gamer would know, they basically can just hack and slash every opponents without having to wait certain amount of time or turn, which is usually found on active time based type of role playing outings. Gamer can just defeat their enemies by using their weapon, which are being divided into three major ones, which are: Sword, Gun and Bomb. Weaponry are clearly essential for this title since players won't be receiving any skills, so they must work out on upgrading any of their chosen attacking gears as they level up. Aside from that forging route to improve weapon level, players can also take the traditional way by looting from enemies or dungeon bosses for new and stronger gears. One notable information for game lover regarding weaponry crafting is that it's never 100% safe, so enhancing gears doesn't always gives you the best of result, that's why careful assessment is definitely required.

Regarding PvP setup, gamer can discover two main choices, that includes Lockdown along with Blast Network. The previous is something more traditional where players are divided into Strikers, Guardian and Recon as they battle up in a 4v4 or 6v6 team setup. For that setting, gamer can use any type of weapons, as for Blast Network, game enthusiasts are asked to battle against others by using bombs only. Both have their own fun factor, so trying the two definitely won't hurt as that can give players that needed outlet outside of adventuring in the basic story mode. Another method of social interaction on this game can also be done by joining guilds (limited to 100) or recruiting friends (250 max).

Similar with any other online based game in today's setup, Spiral Knights also offer cash shop that allow gamer to use real money in acquiring some exclusive items that can help them win much easier compared to free user. However, those who are not keen on splashing real money won't have much concern as they can still finish up that game in comfortable fashion. The current cash setup is quite fair enough as it doesn't give too much positive advantage for paying members and allowing those free user to enjoy their PvE gaming journey. However, those who are willing to pay up for some items can have a clear lead in PvP setup, but it's not actually the most exciting part from Spiral Knights.

Spiral Knights: Final verdict

In terms of visual, this outing do provide a pretty solid view and designs, though it might not always be the best type of stuff for RPG lovers. Those who are looking to experience something more anime based themes or characters might not finding too much appeal from this outing. However, the game's simple mechanics along with comfortable control setup can be that additional factor to attract any players' interest in playing it. Overall, Spiral Knights is a quite interesting game choice for any action RPG enthusiasts who are keen on hack and slashing adventure with some simple puzzle solving stuff throughout their journey. Although it's not a simple browser based setup and do has a pay to win option for PvP players, this outing has that fun and solid playing factor that can easily get everyone hooked in enjoyment.
