Runes of Magic
Runes of Magic Runes of Magic Review
Runes of Magic is a free to play a MMORPG video game. Unlike other games, there are two ways you can play the game. One way is to download the game data directly. I tried to do this the first time, but my slow internet speed was taking ages to download the 6GB of data that was required. I went the alternate route and decided to play the game on a browser. This is the first time I tried to play a fully fledged 3D video game on a browser before and I wasnt sure if my computer would have been able to handle the game.
While playing Runes of Magic on the browser, you are expected to wait up to 5 minutes in order for the game to first load up. I actually had to set the game on a low setting because the game initially refused to load up and was lagging badly. Anyway, just thought I would let out a friendly word of warning for those who dont own a more powerful computer.
As with most other MMORPG video games, you start off needing to create the main character you want to play as. There are three races to choose from and they are a Human, Elf or a Dwarf. You can be either a male or female and both races have differing appearances. Runes of Magic has a pretty deep customization option compared with other games because you can adjust your characters head, nose, arms and other body parts to fit to your own liking. The only other series of games I can name from the top of my head that allows you to do this is WWEs annual wrestling video games.
After you have decided on the look of your chosen character, you will then have to decide on the class type. There are six classes to initially choose from and they include a Warrior, Scout, Rogue, Mage, Priest and a Knight. Each class type wields different weapons and have differing strengths and weaknesses. Once you have done all of that, you are now ready to enter the world of Runes of Magic.
As with most other video games, you start off playing the tutorial. Runes of Magic looks a lot like World of Warcraft in a lot of ways. The graphics and overall character design is very similar to Blizzards MMO behemoth. If youre one of the 10 million games that are currently playing World of Warcraft right now, you will love the look and feel of Runes of Magic too. Since Runes of Magic is free to play, you may even see yourself ditching World of Warcraft altogether.
I must say though that Runes of Magics graphics do look a little dated compared to other 3D MMORPG games available online. Even though I was playing the game on a lower graphical setting, the animation is quite jerky at times and the environments are bland and not that exciting to look at. This isnt a bad thing for those who own an older computer, but those looking for a more modern looking game are better off playing something else.
From my experience with the game, the map was too small and it was very hard to read. The icons were too small and the map failed to show the general direction of where I needed to go to next. Even when I tried to zoom out, it wouldnt allow me to see the whole vicinity of the map. It was a frustrating experience that could have easily been avoided if the map was and waypoints were more user-friendly.
In terms of the games controls and gameplay, comparisons to other similar MMORPG video games are unavoidable. You can use both the keyboard and/or mouse to control your characters movements and to attack enemies. All you have to do is point and click on an enemy and your character will start hacking away. As you progress further into the game, more skills are obtained and you can assign a hotkey on your keyboard to execute your new skills.
The audio in Runes of Magic is a mixed bag. From my personal play through, the music didnt even start even though I turned the music on in the options menu. Although there are sound effects included in this game, sound only appears during combat and rarely can be heard in any other point in the game.
Another problem I had with the game is the camera. The camera is pretty hard to control at times and it fails to follow your character sometimes. When you have to speak to a NPC to accept a quest, you need to be facing them properly which can be slightly annoying too. In other video games, all you need to do is walk up to them and they can start talking with you. When I was riding on my horse, my experience with the game was even worse because the camera again failed to follow my characters movements properly.
Runes of Magic doesnt add anything new to the MMORPG genre and its outdated graphics may not to be everyones taste either. If youve played World of Warcraft, you may find some joy in playing this game as the controls and visuals are quite similar. Despite its many flaws, theres hours of gameplay on offer here and fans of MMORPG games wont be disappointed. Since its initial release in 2009, the game still has had many updates and continues to be popular to this day. If youre looking to play a decent free to play MMORPG video game, look no further than Runes of Magic.
