KingsRoad

KingsRoad KingsRoad Review KingsRoad is a free to play MMORPG that you can play via Facebook. The graphics are in fully 3D and is browser-based so you don’t have to install any game files beforehand to play the game. You might need a powerful computer in order to run this game smoothly. I experienced quite a lot of lag while playing KingsRoad on my computer and it was not a great time.

Still, all you need is to log-in to your Facebook account and the game should load up. Once it loads up. KingsRoad starts off with an interesting cutscene giving you a background to the game’s story. The game is set in a Kingdom called Alderstone. With their King gone, some enemies take over Alderstone to make it their own. You are the hero set to vanquish these enemies and restore peace to Alderstone. If not, Alderstone will crumble. The cutscene itself is presented well with a set of illustrations and a narrator. It’s pretty cool how there is somewhat of a story to this game as most free to play games lack any narrative whatsoever.

Once the cutscene concludes, you are already thrust into battle as a village is being attacked by a couple of bandits. Pretty much, the game starts off immediately as you are a big brute armed with a big sword and shield. Unlike other MMORPG video games, you don’t get the opportunity to create your own character. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but something that is slightly boring if you’re sick of seeing the same looking character archetypes in video games…

KingsRoad starts off with you controlling this big man as he goes through the village defeating the bandits. KingsRoad uses a pretty basic control scheme as the character is controlled by your mouse. All you have to do is click on an open area and the character will start moving. It’s basically a similar control scheme you might see in a RTS game. To attack enemies, all you have to is click on them and your character will automatically slash like crazy. Again, this game plays more like a RTS game than a traditional MMORPG.

Unlike other MMORPG video games, KingsRoad is a linear type of game as there is always a straight path for you to follow. This isn’t like other games from the same genre where you can explore a huge open-world and go wherever you want. KingsRoad just offers linear level types where you walk in one path as you slay the enemies that stand in front of you. It’s fun if you are into games like the Diablo series, but kind of boring if you’re wanting something more open and free.

Although at the start KingsRoad offers a basic battle system, you can unlock more skills for them to use during combat. At the bottom of the screen is a command list of all of the skills you have obtained so far. You can click on them to do more powerful attacks. Not to mention if you kill lots of enemies, a number of them will drop items and/or gold. Gold can be spent to upgrade your armor and weapons because tougher enemies usually prop up the further you progress into this game.

Once you have played through some of the game, you have the choice to choose your preferred class. You have the option to play as a Knight, Archer or Wizard. The cool thing about this game is that you are able to switch between the three if you want to change your playing style to complete a specific quest. Usually in games like this you are stuck with the same class for the rest of your life. Much like other games though, each class has its own set of skills and abilities to it kind of pays to concentrate on one class to maximize the benefits when you level up.

Graphically, KingsRoad is amazing with 3D visuals that rival other mainstream video games. It may not be to the level of PC games of today, but it still looks great. Bear in mind, you might need to play this game on a decent computer if you want to get the smoothest experience possible. My laptop kind of struggled to keep up with this game and I experienced a lot of lag as I already mentioned. That being said, the levels do look nice and everything is bright and colorful much like a fantasy-based MMORPG should look like.

The audio is decent too with a great soundtrack playing in the background. The enemies also groan in pain when you vanquish them and clicks can be heard when you press button or obtain items from the ground. It’s the little things that add the overall atmosphere to the game and makes it seem more like a paid-game more than just a free to play one on Facebook. The presentation overall is commendable as it doesn’t feel cheap or rushed like other free to play games out there.

Overall, KingsRoad is a highly enjoyable MMORPG video game. It has high production values and a very simplistic control scheme. Its linear level design may not be for everyone, but this has been done on purpose so that you get action from the very start. If you have a decent computer that is able to run 3D games from the browser easily, you will find KingsRoad to be a very excellent game to play. If not, you may experience a lot of lag and might be better off playing something else.
