Rise of Mythos Review

When Rise of Mythos loads, you have to choose the character you want to play as. This character will just act as you on-screen avatar. There are no customization options for you to choose from, although this doesn’t really matter too much. You just have to pick a character and then the game starts off officially.

Rise of Mythos is an interesting game since it borrows elements from games of two different genres. It plays a bit like a normal turn-based RPG game, but also has some features from a traditional trading card game as well. When you place a card down, the card’s character will appear on the battlefield and will act out as your ally.

when I played Rise of Mythos, the battle grid was separated into many lines. The enemy is situated on the right hand side of the screen; while your allies are situated on the left side of the screen. You have a set of cards in your deck that you drag and drop them onto the grid. Once you place a card onto the battle grid, it comes to life and they battle the enemies on your behalf.

The battle system plays like a traditional RPG video game as you take turns battling the enemies that are advancing on the other side. At the start of the game, it’s quite easy because you don’t have too many lines of enemies coming at you. All you need to do is just place your cards and your allies will all the work for you. It’s when more enemy lines that are added to the grid, the game gets a lot harder.

Both enemy and all types change the further you progress in Rise of Mythos. At the beginning of the game, you are mainly fighting off little goblins. These guys are easy to defeat as your swordsmen can dispatch of them quite easily. Once you obtain more cards, you can get archers and more that can defeat enemies from a distance.

Different cards in your deck that have different abilities are keys to your success in this game. Most cards can only attack enemies from a close range and in front of them. Other special cards allow you to do more things such as archers. Archers can attack enemies from a long distance which helps you avoid getting hit all the time. There are also cards that can attack from the front and the back too. If an enemy slips pass somehow, these cards allow you to still attack them.

Collecting cards is quite addictive as you get more powerful as you level up. It’s also great to see the variety of cards that you are able to obtain in a short amount of time. This isn’t the type of game where you have to play the game for hours on end before you can start having fun. I found the game to be very entertaining from the very start. There are around 50 levels for you to plough through so there is no shortage of gameplay here. Your cards also get powerful as your earn yourself better armor and equipment the more you play through the game.

Aside from the single player offering in Rise of Mythos, there is also a PvP element where you are able to compete with other players. This mode can be chaotic, challenging and very fun. Yet, the one major flaw that ruins the experience is that it becomes unfair if you are up against more powerful players. It utilizes a controversial “pay-to-win” method as you will need to spend real-life currency in order to pay for your deck to get stronger.

Graphically, Rise of Mythos has excellent presentation. The fantasy design of the characters and enemy types are commendable. The sprite animations look awesome and are big enough for you to see all of the action unfold. They’re not tiny like the mini soldiers you would see in a RTS video game. The action looks great as the battle fills up the entire screen. The game doesn’t even lag which is also great to see.

The sound effects in Rise of Mythos are just as impressive too. The background music is relaxing during menus, while it turns intense and dramatic when it needs to be during battles. The added grunts of enemies and allies when they get it are also a nice tough. Overall, I was mightily surprised by just how good the audio is in this game.

All in all, Rise of Mythos is a great hybrid trading card/RPG video game. The turn-based battle system is easy to master and the game is fun from the very moment it starts. It’s not a boring slow paced game like many RTS video games tend to be. The PvP battles are the only disappointing aspect of the game. As a single player experience, this game is very fun. This game is worth trying if you are bored one day. Best of all, it’s free to play for the most part.
