Hex: Shared of Fate Gameplay Review

HEX: Shards of Fate is a free to play trading card video and mmorpg game that is playable on the PC. The game is no simple browser-based title because you have to download it first. Not to mention you have to check your computer’s specs in order to see if you can actually play it. It’s worth mentioning that a ton of update patches have been released for the game so far. If you plan on downloading the game now, you have to wait until all of the updates have been installed first before you can actually play it. Be patient as interfering this process forces you to do it all over again.

Even though this game is based on trading cards, there is a story involved as it plays like an RPG. You can also choose your own character from a selection of different genders and races. There is a lot of lore to explore here and it’s great to see that so much effort has been made to make this trading card game feel more adventurous and fun. Presentation wise, Hex: Shards of Fate looks phenomenal. A lot of effort has been taken to make this game look pretty and slick. The character models have a lot of detail and the amount of features on the playing cards is great too. The sound effects and background music also adds a bit of flair to the overall atmosphere. It’s nice to see the developer put a lot of effort to a game that they started on Kickstarter. It shows that they care about the fans that backed it in the first place which is nice to see.

HEX: Shards of Fate Looks and Feel

The only thing that stops this free to play mmorpg game from being truly accessible to everyone is the actual gameplay itself. I have played numerous trading card games before in real life and digitally, but this might be the hardest one yet. The rules are quite complex because this is not a simple system that you can learn in a couple of minutes. You need to understand everything about the system in order to succeed in this game. Thankfully, the game prompts you to play through the tutorial before you start the game itself. It’s a simple concept of just attacking the opponent’s cards, because you have to attack the opponent themselves as well. Each person has their own health so you have to use your cards to attack basically everything.

I have to admit, I struggled to play this game as the system is not beginner friendly so to speak. This is because the game utilizes a “Resource” system. Resource cards can be used to aid your cards in battle in both attacking and defence. This can be quite a problem because the opponent can use this to their advantage too making battles very long and complex.

HEX Gameplay

When I played the A.I., they kept defending my attacks and I wasn’t able to do any damage to the opponent themselves. In my first match, I ended up being in a loop as neither myself nor the opponent wasn’t able to do any damage because we kept countering one another. After a while, I understood the system and was able to win a few matches. However, it took several matches and minutes to get used to this style of gameplay.

Hex: Shards of Fate Final Verdict

Overall, Hex: Shards of Fate is a playable trading card game that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy. Sadly though, the learning curve is way too high for it to be fun for beginners and casual gamers. Thankfully the great presentation and slick graphics allowed me to persevere. Still, it’s a tough game if you are not a veteran at trading card style games.
