Metal Assault

Metal Assault Metal Assault joins the elite ranks of Warpportal bringing an action packed 2D side scroller with rough em up, shoot em up fun! Grab some friends, grab a weapon and get in the thick of battle with defense specialist Carl, sharpshooter Marie, the brute force of Burton and tactical expert Ai! Metal Assault is a free to play 2D MMO shooter that is available via Steam or its own official website. Some people might call it an online free version of the famous Metal Slug arcade video game developed by Neo Geo. The game certainly does share are lot of similarities with Metal Slug, but this is not a bad thing. Metal Slug is arguably the most enjoyable 2D side-scrolling shooter of all time, and Metal Assault isn’t too shabby either. It certainly can be fun to play.

Metal Assault Review

Metal Assault is a free to play 2D MMO shooter that is available via Steam or its own official website. Some people might call it an online free version of the famous Metal Slug arcade video game developed by Neo Geo. The game certainly does share are lot of similarities with Metal Slug, but this is not a bad thing. Metal Slug is arguably the most enjoyable 2D side-scrolling shooter of all time, and Metal Assault isn’t too shabby either. It certainly can be fun to play.

The Metal Assault was released a few years ago, but was shut down in 2012. WarpPortal have now revived the game in 2016, although the end result is not that great. The game itself is very fun, but the experience is hindered by lots of technical issues that plague it. Not to mention it took me a while to even launch the game itself. Once you are able to actually launch the game, you can choose to be from the four characters that are available for you to play. The four characters include: Carl, Burton, Ai, and Marie. Each of them has their own weapons, strengths and weaknesses. It’s best to choose someone that suits your playing style.

In terms of visuals and production values, I love the art style of Metal Assault. The 2D artwork looks cool and the character design is admirable. The game has cool sound effects and kick-ass music to boot. However, it’s not as violent as Metal Slug. I remember seeing blood and guts fall out when I first played Metal Slug many years ago. Gameplay wise, there’s not much that can be said about the 2D shooter. You are pretty much just travelling from left to right killing/shooting anything that moves. Unlike Metal Slug, this game has a reticule that you can control with the mouse that allows you to see where you are aiming. This is a helpful gesture and one that should be implemented in other games from this genre.

The main selling point of this game is that it offers way more game modes that options compared to the Metal Slug series. Metal Slug is essentially an offline experience that only offered the main campaign and 2-player co-op. There are more things that you can do in Metal Assault though. In Metal Assault, you can co-op with up to three other players. This means four people can join in and shoot lots of enemies in the main campaign. It’s very fun to play with as many people as you can, although the game is still enjoyable if you go at it alone.

Other modes include a scenario where you have to kill a lot of zombies. However, there are also competitive online modes that you can play in where you battle against real human players. 8 players can join in with modes that include Death Match, Capture the Flag and Zombie Infection Mode. Technical issues do make the experience not that great. There is a bit of lag when I played and I noticed that I wasn’t the only one that had trouble launching the game to actually start! If you don’t experience any technical issues, than this game is great to play. If do you have issues, it can be a very frustrating experience which is a shame.

Final Verdict for Metal Assault

Overall, Metal Assault is a very fun mindless shooter that fans of the Metal Slug series will love to play. The player population is always high so you won’t have trouble finding players to play with or against. The art style is also cool to look at and the sound effects as badass. Sadly, there are technical problems that ruin it. Hopefully the technical issues get fixed so more people can enjoy this game.
