Animation Throwdown Review

animation throwdown special events

Animation Throwdown: The Quest For Cards is a new free to play collectible card game CCG that has been released online since May 2017. Unlike many other trading card video games, Animation Throwdown has simplistic rules that make sure the game is accessible to anyone of any skill level. The game includes many of 20th Century Fox’s most famous cartoons and brings them together in order to fight for trading card supremacy. Even though this game is free to play for most people, on Steam you can buy the "Ultimate Bundle" pack that is worth around $19.99 USD. This version of the game gives you lots of in–game currency instantly so you can upgrade your deck the way you want at the very beginning of the game.

Animation Throwdown: The Quest For Cards First Look

The five Fox animated cartoons that are included Animation Throwdown : The Quest For Cards are Family Guy, King of the Hill, Bob’s Burger, American Dad and also Futurama. Sadly, as of right now the game is missing The Cleveland Show and of course the most popular cartoon of the bunch, The Simpsons. It’s weird to me The Simpsons haven’t been added to this card game, although I guess the property has many other video games of its own for you to play with instead. At the very beginning of the game, you are required to choose the character you want to play at first. The only five characters that you can be from the start are Bobby from Kill of the Hill, Brian from Family Guy, Leela from Futurama, Bob from Bob’s Burgers and Roger from America Dad. Peter Griffin says a funny joke at the start saying he swiped right when he saw Aquaman in another game.

Animation Throwdown Gameplay

You don’t have to worry about choosing your first character quickly, because you have the option of changing your character at any point in time. As you further progress in the game, the more you’ll be able to choose additional characters from the five aforementioned animated comedies. You have to level up quite high in order to unlock more of the popular characters though giving you the incentive to play this game for several hours on end. In terms of the game itself, the card battle system is similar to other trading card video games as you can only have up to five cards out on the battlefield at one time. There’s an attack mode on each card represented as a hammer while the health bar is represented as hearts. The goal of the game is to simply kill off all of your opponent’s cards and their main health bar too. In order to attack other cards, your play needs to have an attack power higher than the opponents. If your attack level is lower than your opponent, they can strike you back and kill you off quickly if you’re not paying enough attention!

A clever gimmick of the game is that you can combine two cards to make an even stronger card. That said, not all cards are compatible so you have to experiment and research which combos work best and when to draw them out of your deck. The gameplay can get really addictive and it gets even better once you find rarer cards and combos to use. However, the game can get quite repetitive after a few hours because all you are really doing is the same moves over and over again against either the A.I. or real players from around the world. Not to mention you have to save up in order to buy more packs that could allow you to use rarer and more powerful cards in your deck.

Due to the fact that this game is free to play, the game sadly has a pay to win vibe to it. The more you pay, the better your chances are of winning because you’ll gain access to rarer and more useful cards. If you don’t spend money on the game, it will take you longer to grind and you may struggle playing against other players in the long run. Graphically, Animation Throwdown has nice big and cartoon style of visuals and animation. Everything is fully licensed so all of the characters are legit and aren’t just cheap knock-offs. That being said, the game sadly has no voice-overs whatsoever which is a bit of a shame. It would have given the game more life if the official voice actors were brought back to actually voice in this game.

Animation Throwdown: The Quest For Cards Final Verdict by us

Overall, Animation Throwdown: The Quest For Cards is a fun and enjoyable trading card game that almost anybody should be able to learn how to play it. It’s really accessible because the rules are simplistic and the cartoon theme will make it fun for kids. However, the game is not perfect as it’s pay to win and there’s no voice-overs whatsoever. Another big omission is the fact that The Simpsons aren’t in the game too!
