Elsword Game Review

elsworld game review

Elsword is a free-to-play 2D MMORPG developed in South Korea. Much like other free-to-play games, registration is easy and best of all; you don’t have to pay a cent to enjoy the benefits of playing the game. Elsword’s PC requirements are quite small so you don’t need a very powerful computer in order to play it. Best of all, it only takes 1GB to download so you don’t have to wait very long to play it either.

The game’s menus are easy to navigate with very big buttons for you to click on. This is helpful for players such as young kids who may want to play the game.  There’s also some cool sounding J-Pop music playing in the background too. As always, you have to choose the type of character that you’d like to be in Elsword before you can start playing the game. Although you cannot alter the appearance of the character as there are four preset characters for you to choose from.

Firstly, there’s the main character called Elsword who looks like a younger version of Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud only that he has red hair instead of blonde. The similarities don’t stop there as Elsword also wields a huge sword. You can also be a purple haired girl called Aisha. She’s the magic expert out of the four characters so gamers who love conjuring up spells should definitely choose her as their main character. Then there’s the stereotypical elf character by the name of Rena. Much like in most other games, the female elf character is always an expert with a bow and arrow and Rena is no different. Lastly, there’s the more unique character called Raven. He’s rugged man with long black hair and has a metallic arm as his main weapon along with a sword too.

Once you’ve made a choice of the character you want to be, you are ready to enter the bright and colorful world of Elsword. Being that this game is made in South Korea; gamers will notice the obvious Asian-inspired design of Elsword’s visuals. Fans of Japanese anime cartoons will absolutely love the presentation in Elsword. The character models look really cute and the 2D visuals really make it look like an interactive cartoon. It’s one of the best looking free-to-play video games I’ve ever seen and goes to show you that you don’t always have to make a game 3D to make it look great.

In terms of the Elsword gameplay, this isn’t your usual MMORPG affair. It’s a side-scrolling hack-and-slash game in the same fashion as Capcom’s “Viewtiful Joe” series. Don’t worry about getting lost in this game as the levels are not that big and dungeons are located on a separate screen. There are no complicated levels for you to navigate through like in other side-scrolling games such as the “Castlevania” series. You start off in the town where you can talk to the many non-playable characters to accept quests to complete or buy any items that will help you on your journey. Once you are ready, you can start fighting the enemies in the dungeons.

I cannot begin to stress the high quality production values that Elsword offers to it gamers. The soundtrack is great to listen to and background music changes in each area you enter in the game. In a town, the music is relaxing but if you enter a dungeon, some fast beat action music hits which really adds to the overall atmosphere in the game.

Elsword is still a MMORPG at heart as you can interact with other players anytime you are in a town. You can even start a party so other players can help you defeat the many enemies that lurk in the dungeons in Elsword. Having said that, the combat is accessible enough you can even fight the enemies all by yourself if you wish. Combat in Elsword is similar to other hack-and-slash games. All you have to do is move forward using the direction keys and slice enemies using the “X” and “Z” key. The characters can dish out devastating combos if you press combinations of “X” and “Z” multiple times. Characters can even execute special skills assigned on the WASD keys. These special skills are the most visually spectacular elements in the entire game and they can punish your enemies very quickly when you use them.

At the end of each dungeon level, there’s an epic boss battle that will await you. Bosses are usually bigger than the other enemies in the game and they look very impressive. Don’t worry if you’re scared about facing bosses as your buddies can always help you out and your special skills really come in handy here too. Nevertheless, epic boss battles are just one of the many great features that Elsword has in store for MMORPG fans.

If there’s anything negative I have to say about Elsword, it’s that it can get very repetitive. This is because quests are usually set in the same dungeons which means you will have to fight the same enemies and the same boss at the same location all over again. Not only this, but you have to defeat every enemy in the area in order for you to proceed. You cannot flee from battle like in other MMORPG games. Most of the quests require you to enter the same dungeon up to three times playing it in under the Normal, Hard and Very Hard difficulty settings consecutively…

Apart from the repetitive nature of the quests offered in Elsword, the rest of the game screams out high quality. It’s amazing a game of this caliber is actually free for you to play as I feel Elsword is a game that has better gameplay and production values than full-priced games available in stores. Elsword Online is right up there with Wizards 101 as one of the best games I’ve played that’s free-to-play. The music, audio and graphics are simply stunning and I’m sure few would disagree with me with that statement.
