Magic Campus Game Review

magic campus game

Magic Campus is a free-to-play MMORPG. Unlike with some other MMORPG games, Magic Campus is browser-based so you don’t need to download the game. All you have to do is register your details and you are already free-to-play the game already. You also don’t have to worry about your PC requirements either as the game should be able to run on most computers.

As with every other game from the MMORPG genre, you have to start off by creating the type of character that you will like to play as. There are six classes available for you to choose from in Magic Campus and each class has its own strengths and weaknesses. You can choose from either the following classes: Cleric, Warrior, Fighter, Hunter, Sharpshooter and Musician. Although you can choose between a female and male character, you cannot alter anything else other than the color of their clothes. This isn’t too much to gripe about but it would have been nice if you could change the hairstyle of your main character.

Once you’ve done that, you are officially ready to play Magic Campus. Magic Campus visuals are simplistic and isn’t the powerhouse such as Wizards 101. This is to be expected since it’s a browser-based game that requires no additional downloads in order for you to play it. The game’s camera is from an isometric viewpoint much like other famous RPG games such as the Diablo series.

The character models are cute its game design is heavily inspired from other entertainment mediums. Most of the characters resemble Japanese-anime cartoons especially the ninja-like “Sharpshooter” class. However, one character made me laugh as he blatantly resembles Harry Potter. Not only has that, but he even specialized in magic combat complete with his own staff.

One thing that is obvious to note is that Magic Campus lacks the high production values from other free-to-play titles such as Elsword and Wizards 101. This is because there are no voice-overs to speak of and there’s also a lack of sound on the game too. The only type of audio you will hear is the background music. Normally this isn’t a bad thing but Magic Campus only has one tune and it repeats over and over again. I got sick of the tune very quickly while playing Magic Campus and decided to play the game in mute instead.

In terms of its gameplay, Magic Campus is pretty old-school with its approach. Enemies are not positioned into the game field itself and only attack you randomly whenever you are walking in an open space. This is a feature that was used in many RPG games during the ‘80s and ‘90s but I feel it’s an outdated feature now. Also, Magic Campus uses the turn-based combat system where you have to wait until you are able to attack your enemies. Again, this lacks the fast paced combat system that is implemented in more modern RPG games such as the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII-2. The controls in Magic Campus are pretty easy to master. You control your character using the mouse and there are lots of helpful visual cues on the game screen itself to tell you where you need to go to next. Another thing that makes this game easy for beginners is that you can set the combat system to “auto”.  This means the computer itself can fight for you and decide which attacks you should do next. It’s like playing the game on “auto-pilot”.

One of the best features in Magic Campus is that you can join any player anytime. Players can ask others if they want to join their party almost instantly via instant messaging. The only negative thing about this is that the leader always controls where the party goes at all times. So if you joined a specific party, there’s nothing you can do but watch where the leader goes. On the upside, you can leave a party whenever you want. You can even choose to challenge other players in PvP combat if you’re feeling confident enough.

Magic Campus may not be the best looking and innovative MMORPG game ever made, but its accessibility is to be commended. It’s a game that can be played by anyone with a computer with an internet connection since it is browser-based and costs nothing for you to play. There are numerous quests on offer which means Magic Campus can offer gamers countless hours of gaming fun. I only hope that the developer includes a different song to the game as that tune has been ringing in my head for several days now…
