R.O.D.E Online Review

R.O.D.E Online is an upcoming fantasy based MMORPG game. The name R.O.D.E is short for Rise of Dragonian Era and is a dragon based fantasy game. One of the great things about R.O.D.E Online is that the game will be free to play. This means you will not have to pay a single cent if you want to play this game. Although as with every other PC game, please make sure you have the required specs before you try to download and play this game.

You don’t want to waste your time downloading 10GB worth of data just to find out your computer is too weak to handle playing this game.  10GB of hard drive space and 1GB of RAM are just the minimum required specs you need in order to play R.O.D.E Online. If you want to play this game to its full potential, the required specs are a huge 20GB of space and 3GB of RAM.

With this being said, the game isn’t officially out yet so you may have time to upgrade your computer until then. The first closed beta test occurred last month for North American gamers and another beta test is coming in February for both North American and other countries. As announced on the official facebook page for the game, this upcoming beta will be the final test until they finally officially release the game. The upcoming beta will be testing out the game’s PvP system. After that, hopefully they will announce the release date for the game very soon. It’s set to be released sometime in 2012 so that’s a good sign.

The first beta test for the game was undertaken in December 2011, and some people already had a chance to experience some of the gameplay that R.O.D.E Online currently offers. From what I’ve seen so far, the game is looking very impressive and has high quality production values. Having said that, many people were expecting the game to have better graphics considering it’s a huge 10GB download. Nevertheless from my point of view, I still feel that the game’s visuals still hold up pretty good to today’s standards. They look just as good as any other free to play MMORPG game out there.

In terms of gameplay, one thing that will appeal to MMORPG fans the most is the unique feature of being able to ride on your own dragon. Unfortunately, you don’t get the chance to ride on your own dragon just yet. This feature will be implemented eventually when the full game is finally released. From the sounds of things, the ability to ride on your own dragon will be truly awesome.

Combat in R.O.D.E Online is your typical MMORPG affair. It’s the usual point and click system where you automatically attack an enemy by simply just clicking on the right mouse button. I feel this system of gameplay is pretty outdated and I prefer the faster paced combat system seen in other games like DC Universe Online. This may not be a problem for gamers who like this style of gameplay, but if you’ve played many other MMORPG games that also use this type of combat system, you may get bored of this pretty quickly.

People who participated in the closed beta have mentioned that the game lacked a tutorial mode. Although the game teaches you how to move your character around, no other tutorials are given. If you want to know how to read the map, attack and talk to non playable characters, you will have to learn all this all by yourself. Since the game isn’t officially out yet, let’s hope a proper tutorial is given when the full game is released later this year.

Voice overs are pretty rare in free to play MMORPG games but R.O.D.E Online has some of them recorded. Every character does not speak in this game and the ones that do, they only pretty much just say one sentence when you talk to them. R.O.D.E Online also has a nice soundtrack and excellent sound effects as well. I always love it when you play a game with a nice soundtrack as it adds to the overall experience of immersing yourself inside the gaming world.

There have been countless other MMORPG games I’ve played that featured no music whatsoever which kind of made the game boring walking around in dead silence all the time…

R.O.D.E Online is one of many free to play MMORPG games that is set to be released later this year. From what I’ve seen so far from the game, it promises to be a fun title. Although the combat system looks outdated, the fact that you have the chance to ride on your own dragon in this games sound very intriguing. Look out to play the full version of R.O.D.E Online sometime later this year.
