The game is relatively new as it was only released in March 2012. Much like Heroic Odyssey (another MMORPG game), this game has modern day graphics and some pretty high production values that make it a step above most other free to play browser based video games out there. Much like every other MMORPG game out there, you can choose to be a male or female character to play as in the game. But unlike in other MMORPG games, you cannot alter the actual appearance of your character. This can be seen as a slight disappointment since its always enjoyable spending several minutes customizing the look of your own character. Before you start playing Soul of Guardian, there’s the choice to play as four different class types. First up there’s the Blade Warrior class which is high on accuracy. The next class is the Hammer Judge which has high attack and defence. Another class is the Spear Guard which has high dodging ability and resilience. Lastly, you have the Dagger Assassin which is a balance of all of the aforementioned class types. Soul of Guardian play very similarly to another browser based MMORPG game called Heroic Odyssey. Both games were released in 2012 so if you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll have two great games to play. Graphically, the game isn’t the as good looking as Heroic Odyssey but it’s not bad either. The bright and colorful visuals truly shine here and RPG fans will love the overall design of the game. Speaking of design, the illustrations and character models in the game are eye catching as well. There are many creatures you will encounter in Soul of Guardian that vary in size and design. One of my favorite characters in the game is your accompanying pet called the “Wee Panda”. If you’ve ever watched the famous “Kung-Fu Panda” movies before, your companion looks exactly like Po from the films. The panda also helps you out during fights too. There’s also a cool blue wolf you can ride on to get to the many places in the game. One of my favorite features in the whole game is the soundtrack. The music sounds like something you might hear from an epic Hollywood fantasy-based film more than from a free to play video game. The music changes each time you enter a new area and it’s a pleasure to listen to. The music definitely draws inspiration from the LOTR trilogy or even Final Fantasy XII for that matter. Much like Heroic Odyssey, Soul of Guardian has the neat feature of adding the “auto-navigation” system. This is helpful for games like this where you need to traverse to many places talking to many different characters littered throughout the game’s universe. There have been countless other games I’ve played where I got lost even while checking the map for directions. Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about any of that here in Soul of Guardian. There are also items you can collect called “flying shoes” which enable you to teleport to certain places too. Flying shoes are limited though so you cannot use them all the time… The weakest aspect of Soul of Guardian has to be the combat system. It’s a simple point and click affair and the AI aren’t all that smart either. This is the same type of problem that plagued Heroic Odyssey as well. The game gets better though as you progress as the enemies get tougher and you’re forced to partner up with other players to take your enemies down. It’s also great to know you can learn new skills in this game and that the combat is not fully simulated. Still, it’s an area that I feel needs improving on. Soul of Guardian is an excellent MMORPG game that fans of Heroic Odyssey will love to play. The graphics and gameplay are great and it’s a game that never gets boring. Some of the quests in the beginning might get repetitive, although you level up pretty quickly in this game which makes the game fast paced and exciting. The combat is a little weak, but it’s something you will get used to over time. The best part of Soul of Guardian in my opinion is the soundtrack though. It is a very colorful and enjoyable browser-based video game which means you have the luxury of not needing to download any of the game data first in order to play it. This can be seen as a good thing as you can start playing the game almost instantly. You start off picking the character you’d like to play as in the video game. There are choices of three pre-made male and female characters you can choose from. I prefer games where you can actually alter the appearance of your character, although the character design in Heroic Odyssey isn’t too bad so picking a character to be won’t be such as hassle. There are three classes to choose from as well each specializing in a specific area of combat. There is the Kunlun who is good at melee and physical attacks. Secondly, there’s the Xiaoyo who are good at ranged attacks. Lastly, you can choose to play as the Tangmen who are experts at short ranged physical attacks. Browser based games have come a long way over the last few years. Most browser based video games looked rather basic during the early ‘00s. Heroic Odyssey was released in 2012 and its impressive visuals really shine here. The graphics are bright and the design of the game is downright beautiful. The game world is huge and there are many large and varied places you can get to explore in Heroic Odyssey. Another great thing about Heroic Odyssey is the soundtrack that plays in the background too. Each new area you will visit in the game you will be greeted with a new tune to listen to. This can be seen as a great thing as most free to play video games either only have one song that loops over and over, or no sound in the game at all. The soundtrack helps capture the atmosphere of the game and is one of the many things I’m sure gamers will love about Heroic Odyssey as well. As beautiful as this game is, I was surprised to notice that the game loads very fast too. My computer is a few years old, yet it was still able to play this game with no sweat. Anybody out there with a computer and a decent internet connection should have no trouble playing this game either. Some games from the MMORPG genre can be slow paced and feature a mammoth tutorial mode for you to grow through. Heroic Odyssey is a game that is very fast paced and you can undertake many quests within minutes of just starting the game. At first, the quests are simple as you just need to talk to a specific person. As you progress further into the game, the quests get a lot more entertaining to play. One of the worst things game developers can do these days is feature no action in the game. This is something I’ve noticed being used frequently in the RTS genre lately. Heroic Odyssey thankfully allows you to see your characters hack-n-slash in action. Although I have to admit, the combat system and animation in this game are very basic. All you need to do is click on the enemy and your character will kill them on the spot. The enemies are a bit dumb and just stand there in one spot as you try and kill them. It’s not until you hit them a few times do they actually notice you will then start attacking back. Another weird thing that happens to enemies in this game is that they respawn instantly on the same spot you killed the other person. For example, if I killed one soldier, his replacement will respawn on the same spot allowing you to kill his replacement too! Despite the less-than-stellar combat system in Heroic Odyssey, the quests are fun and the overall gameplay experience is awesome. Leveling up in this game is fast and quests can be completed at a rapid pace. There are a plethora of things you can do in this game and the excellent music and graphics make playing Heroic Odyssey that much better in my opinion.
