The Desert Warrior

The Desert Warrior The Desert Warrior is a unique free to play top down shooter that is similar to the old “Asteroids” video game. Your goal is to pretty much survive in the middle of the desert while you are trying to fend off waves and waves of evil looking monsters. The monsters look like Rancors from the Star Wars movies and there are a lot of them that want this lone human dead. The human only has a few weapons to keep himself alive from.

The game starts off immediately so it pays off to read the controls first before you start playing. You use the WASD or directional keys to move this human around. There is an icon on the middle of the screen that you can move around using the mouse. This helps you aim while you press the mouse button to fire. You can fire at all directions and shoot from a short range or from afar. All of the bullets from the guns you have can travel across the entire screen, so you don’t have to worry about getting too close to the enemies all the time.

There are two modes in this game. There is the main game where you can upgrade your weapons and increase your stats. This is where if you die, you can continue on from where you left off. The levels look all the same because you are in the same location pretty much killing the same looking monster. However, the levels get harder as you go because the monsters have more health and increase in speed and numbers too.

The survival mode is when you only have one life bar and there is no chance of continuing or getting more powerful weapons. This is where the game tests how long you can survive without dying and how many kills you were able to rack up. I managed to kill 77 monsters during my first go which isn’t bad, but I intend to increase my score eventually. You can even share your highscore on Facebook so your friends and join in too.

In the normal game, you start off with a normal rifle. As you kill monsters, money will be dropped. You can collect money to buy more guns and ammo for them. The Uzi is the next gun you can buy which has a faster firing rate. My favorite gun is the shotgun because its range is long and is the most powerful weapon in the game. The shotgun only costs $200 compared to the so-called “best” gun which is the AK-47. The AK-47 costs $500 and its ammo is more expensive too. It is powerful, but is not as efficient as the shotgun. The other weapon you can get is a grenade which costs $100. They are very powerful as you only need to press the space bar and every visible monster onscreen will die. ,/p>

As you progress further into the game, you can increase the stats of the lone desert warrior too. You can increase the level of speed, his life bar and amount of packages that are dropped by monsters. This becomes very important when you get to the higher levels since the monster themselves get faster and have better health too. You will need to collect health packs and as much money as you can to try and fend them off when they get very angry.

Production wise, The Desert Warrior is pretty budget. The game is played from a top-down view and there is no detail whatsoever on the two character models that are in this game. Every monster looks the same and the main character as generic as can be. Not to mention you are playing on the same looking desert over and over again as the environments never change.

Thankfully, the audio is more impressive than that of the visuals. Each gun makes a different sound which I thought was a nice touch. Even the human and monsters scream in pain whenever they have been hit. There is also tense music playing in the background that perfectly fits the scary mood that this game is trying to portray.

The Desert Warrior is a fun game while it lasts and it easily accessible and playable to anyone. The controls and visuals are simplistic and fans of the old Asteroids game may find more enjoyment out of this game. With that being said, the game’s appeal doesn’t last very long mainly because you are doing the same thing over and over again. The game can get repetitive very fast when you are killing the same looking monsters in the same desolate location. Still, this game is free to play so there is not much harm done if you want to give this game a try. The survival mode is arguably the best mode though, because you can brag to your friends about your score.
