Gwent: The Witcher Card Game Review

Gwent is a trading card video game that first featured in The Witcher novels written by Andrzej Sapowski. However, this card collectible game , CCG became more noticeable when it was playable for the first time in the 2015 video game called The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. While Gwent is playable in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the game is even more accessible now because it’s now a free to play video game out on the PC. The game was in beta for the majority of 2018, but was finally released fully on PC in October 2018. Console gamers don’t have to worry though because the game will be playable on PS4 and Xbox One in December 2018. Only mobile gamers and Nintendo Switch owners will be missing out on Gwent as it seems like developer CD Projekt Red isn’t releasing the game on more platforms anytime soon.

That said, cross play between the PC version and console versions will be available one the game is out for everyone. PS4 and Xbox One cross play isn’t possible since Sony usually doesn’t want its players to mingle with Xbox gamers for some reason. Anyway, Gwent: The Witcher Card game offers both PvP and a single player campaign. The tutorial is quite lengthy and it’s cool to see the game having high production values. The game has full voice overs as the actors from The Witcher 3 have come back to reprise their roles. Not to mention the graphics in this game are impressive because each card is animated and they come to life when you put them into the battlefield. The sound effects are also top notch and the HUD presentation is easy to follow because it isn’t cluttered all over the screen.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game

The goal of the entire game is fairly simple because each card has a number at the corner of it. The higher the number, the stronger your cards and deck will be. You have three rounds to beat your opponent and you don’t have many chances to fight back if you draw lower numbered cards. Your decks have 25 cards each which have obviously been shuffled. Most of the cards have soldiers on them with swords and bow and arrow. You can even draw spell cards that you can fuse with your deck in order to increase your cards’ attack power. Games don’t last very long as each round just takes a few seconds for you to do your turn. The only thing that might not appeal to some gamers is the fact that this game has microtransactions. Due to this, the game might have a pay-to-win element to it that is likely going to scare away some gamers to its PvP arena mode.

That being said, the Arena mode is optional because you can always just play the game against the A.I. in the single player campaign that this game has to offer. Anyway, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is fun especially if you are a gamer that loves trading card style of video games. The ccg game rules are easy to follow and the high production values are a huge plus. It’s worth playing if you have a PC while wait for the game to on PS4 and Xbox One this December!
